Ideal Weight Calculator
Estimate a healthy body weight for your height (Devine formula).
A rough estimate of a healthy weight for your height, based on the widely used Devine formula.
How the Math Works
The Devine formula calculates ideal body weight using height in inches with a base weight and incremental adjustment. For men, it starts at 50 kg for a 60-inch (5-foot) baseline, adding 2.3 kg for each additional inch. Women use a 45.5 kg base at 60 inches, then add the same 2.3 kg per inch increment. This linear relationship adjusts weight proportionally for height variations above the reference point.
Practical Applications
To apply the calculator, first convert your height to inches (e.g., 6 feet 2 inches = 74 inches). Subtract 60 from your height, multiply by 2.3, then add the gender-specific base weight (50 kg for men, 45.5 kg for women). For example, a 70-inch man would calculate as 50 + (2.3 × 10) = 73 kg. This provides a quick reference weight based on standard height-weight correlations.
Day-to-Day Use
This calculation helps set realistic weight goals for health improvement, track progress during fitness programs, or plan nutritional needs. Medical professionals use it for medication dosing, while individuals use it to assess if their weight falls within a potentially healthy range for their stature. It's especially useful for comparing weight across different heights without complex BMI interpretations.
Worked example
Male, 69 in (5'9") → 50 + 2.3 × 9 = 70.7 kg (≈156 lb).
FAQ
Is there one true ideal weight?
