How the Math Works

The Sod Calculator uses a straightforward mathematical formula to determine how much sod you'll need: rolls = area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage. First, calculate your total lawn area by multiplying length by width in feet. Then, add a waste factor (typically 5-10%) to account for cuts and irregular shapes. Finally, divide by the coverage area of one sod roll (usually 9 square feet) to find the number of rolls required. This ensures you purchase enough sod without excessive leftover pieces.

Practical Applications

To use this calculator practically, first measure your lawn area by breaking irregular shapes into rectangles and triangles, then sum the total square footage. Decide on your waste allowance - 5% for simple rectangular lawns, 10-15% for complex shapes with many angles. Check your sod roll's packaging for the exact coverage area, then plug these numbers into the formula. For example, a 500 sq ft lawn with 10% waste and 9 sq ft rolls would require: 500 × 1.10 ÷ 9 = 62 rolls. You can also calculate pallets by dividing rolls by rolls per pallet.
