This calculation transforms your garden or lawn dimensions into the exact amount of soil required, accounting for the conversion between inches and feet as well as cubic feet to cubic yards. The formula works by first calculating volume in cubic feet (length × width × height in feet), then dividing by 27 to get cubic yards, which is the standard measurement for soil delivery.

To use this calculator practically, simply measure your planting area's length and width in feet, then determine how deep you want the soil layer in inches. For example, a 10-foot by 5-foot garden bed with a 6-inch soil depth would require approximately 0.93 cubic yards of topsoil.
