Plant Spacing Calculator

Find how many plants fit a bed at a given spacing.

Plants needed (plants) 40
Bed area 40

Formula: plants = area ÷ (spacing in feet)²

Step-by-step with your numbers:
1. Values used:
2. Bed length = 10
3. Bed width = 4
4. Plant spacing = 12
5.
6. Plants needed = Bed length x Bed width = 10 x 4 = 40plants
7. Bed area = Bed length x Bed width = 10 x 4 = 40
Did we solve your problem today?

Plan a flower bed or vegetable plot: how many plants fit at your chosen spacing (square grid).

The math behind it

Each plant occupies a spacing × spacing square. Plants ≈ bed area ÷ (spacing in feet)².

Worked example

10 × 4 ft bed (40 ft²), 12 in spacing → 40 ÷ 1² = 40 plants.
