How the Math Works

Since mulch is commonly sold in cubic yards or standard bag sizes (like 2 cubic feet), this number is then divided accordingly (e.g., cubic feet / 27 to get cubic yards).
Practical Applications
To apply this, measure the length and width of the area you want to cover with a tape measure. Decide how deep you want the mulch—usually 2 to 3 inches is optimal for weed suppression and moisture retention without suffocating the soil. Plug these numbers into the formula to know exactly how much bulk mulch or how many bags to purchase from the garden center.
