Taking the base-2 logarithm works because bacteria double in quantity each generation. Once we know the number of generations, dividing the total time by this value gives us the average time for each generation cycle.

To apply this calculation, start by measuring your bacterial culture's initial concentration (N₀) using techniques like colony counting or optical density. After allowing growth for a known period (such as 8 hours), measure the final concentration (N). Input these values along with the time elapsed into the calculator.
