How the Math Works
Insertion loss measures how much signal power is lost as it passes through a device, expressed in decibels (dB). The formula IL = 10·log₁₀(P_in ÷ P_out) calculates this by comparing input power (P_in) to output power (P_out) using a logarithmic scale. The division P_in / P_out gives the power ratio, and the base-10 logarithm converts this ratio into decibels, which efficiently represents very large or small values. A positive result indicates signal attenuation, while zero means no loss.
Practical Applications
To use this calculator, measure the input power entering your device and the output power exiting it, typically using a signal generator and power meter.
