Brinell Hardness Number Calculator
Find the Brinell hardness number (BHN).
The Brinell test presses a hard ball into a surface and measures the dent.
The math behind it
BHN = 2F ÷ (πD(D − √(D² − d²))). A smaller indentation means a harder material.
Worked example
3000 kgf, 10 mm ball, 4 mm dent → about 229 HB.
FAQ
Brinell vs Vickers?
Both measure hardness; Vickers uses a diamond pyramid and suits harder materials.
