How the Math Works

The Poker Odds Calculator uses probability theory to determine your chances of improving your hand. The formula 1 - (1 - outs/unseen)(1 - outs/(unseen-1)) calculates the likelihood of hitting at least one of your 'outs' over two future cards. It works by first finding the probability of NOT hitting an out on the turn (1 - outs/unseen) and NOT hitting on the river (1 - outs/(unseen-1)), multiplies these together to get the probability of missing both, then subtracts from 1 to get the probability of hitting at least once. For example, with 9 outs and 47 unseen cards, your chance of improving is approximately 35%.

Then estimate the number of 'unseen' cards (typically 47 after the flop, 46 after the turn). Plug these numbers into the formula or use the calculator directly.
