The math behind it

Counting from the right, position 1 is ones, position 2 tens, position 3 hundreds, and so on. The place value is the digit times 10^(position − 1).

In 58,234 the digit in position 3 (hundreds) is 2, worth 200.

What about decimals?

Positions to the right of the decimal point use negative powers of ten (tenths, hundredths…).
