How the Math Works
The Thinset Calculator uses the formula bags = area ÷ coverage × (1 + waste) to determine how much mortar you'll need. You start by measuring the total area you're covering in square feet. Then you divide by the coverage rate, which tells you how many square feet one bag can cover based on the tile size and application method. Finally, you multiply by (1 + waste) — typically 1.1 for 10% waste — to account for spillage and uneven cuts.
Practical Applications
To use this calculator practically, first measure your project area by multiplying length by width in feet. Check your thinset bag label for the coverage rate, usually listed as square feet per bag. Enter these values along your expected waste percentage (10-15% is common) into the formula. For irregular spaces, break the area into rectangles and add them together before calculating to get an accurate bag estimate.
