Fence Calculator

Estimate posts, rails and pickets for a wood fence.

Posts (posts) 14
Pickets (pickets) 219
Total rail length 300

Formula: posts = length ÷ spacing + 1

Step-by-step with your numbers:
1. Values used:
2. Fence length = 100
3. Post spacing = 8
4. Rails per section = 3
5. Picket width = 5.5
6. Gap between pickets = 0
7.
8. Posts = 14posts
9. Pickets = 219pickets
10. Total rail length = 300
Did we solve your problem today?

Plan a wood privacy or picket fence: how many posts, rails and pickets you'll need for a given run.

The math behind it

Posts = fence length ÷ post spacing, rounded up, plus one for the end.

Pickets = fence length (in inches) ÷ (picket width + gap).

Rail length = rails per section × fence length.

Worked example

100 ft fence, 8 ft spacing, 3 rails, 5.5 in pickets touching → 14 posts, ~219 pickets, 300 ft of rail.
