How the Math Works
The Box Fill Calculator uses a fundamental electrical code formula: box volume equals the total number of conductors multiplied by the required volume per conductor. Each conductor passing through the box is counted, and NEC tables specify that each conductor requires 2.25 cubic inches of space. For example, four 12-gauge conductors would need 9 cubic inches (4 × 2.25). The calculation also accounts for internal clamps, fittings, and equipment grounding conductors, ensuring an accurate minimum box size.
Practical Applications
To use this calculator, first count all conductors entering the electrical box, including the equipment ground. Determine the wire gauge (typically 14, 12, or 10 AWG) and apply the corresponding volume factor from NEC Table 314.15(B). Add conductor counts for internal components like cable clamps, which count as one conductor each.
