How the Math Works
Molality is a concentration unit that measures the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent. The formula molality = moles ÷ kg of solvent simply divides the amount of solute (in moles) by the mass of the solvent (in kilograms). For example, if you dissolve 2 moles of salt in 4 kilograms of water, the molality is 2 ÷ 4 = 0.5 mol/kg. This calculation is straightforward because it requires only two measurements: the quantity of the dissolved substance and the weight of the liquid it's dissolved in.
