How the Math Works

The formula BF = ((DBH − 4) ÷ 4)² × number of 16-ft logs calculates board feet (BF) by first adjusting the diameter at breast height (DBH) — a tree's diameter measured 4.5 feet above ground — by subtracting 4 inches to account for unusable wood at the base. This adjusted value is divided by 4, squared to represent cross-sectional area, and multiplied by the number of 16-foot log sections. The result approximates the total lumber yield, reflecting how much usable timber can be extracted from the tree.
